The Agenda offers a valuable tool to support in a structured way initiatives of Culture, e-Government, Internet of Things, Water and Clean Energy, among other innovation spaces, as well as to promote international cooperation of cities.

The original project to create Smart City Agendas through knowledge models stems from previous experiences promoting collaboration of Mexican and European cities during the period of 2011-2013. The Smart Cities Thematic Group of the Mexican Technology Platform developed a Strategic Smart Cities Innovation Agenda in 2014.

The Smart Cities group was made up of representatives of universities, research centers, mxTI, federal government, and municipal governments associated with cities from different regions. It held periodic meetings during 2014-2017, obtaining valuable feedback that influenced the co-creation of a reference Smart City Agenda through a pilot that took place in the city of Queretaro.
