Mexico City competes among the first places for urban population in the world. In 2012, a voluntary call was made for key city actors and international organizations to collaborate in a public-private partnership focused on developing a Smart City Agenda proposal using open innovation methodologies.

Among the partner organizations who contributed in the creation of this Agenda were:

A European network of Living Labs joined this initiative to support networking with European cities and provide feedback. The co-creation of the Smart City Agenda involved the compilation of recommendations from all the organizations convened under the coordination of the Economic and Social Council of Mexico City supported by Project Spriboand collaborating closely with Mexico City’s government:

The main actions carried out were:

  • Promote triple-helix linkages with the civil society

  • Establish poles of innovation with specific vocations

  • Publish the innovation cartography of the city

  • Create virtual innovation spaces through Living Labs by specific thematic areas

  • Propose cooperation programs between city innovation poles and innovation spaces

  • Teach courses and conduct workshops to transmit knowledge

  • Promote smart municipal public services based on open data

  • Promote international cooperation vehicles

  • Participate in national and international Smart City events

  • Organize a Smart City local event to promote its innovation spaces

  • Help project a ‘Knowledge City’ image
